The Website Project after Dark

Getting Traffic

There are a few ways to get traffic.

1.) Buy it. I don’t like this way, but you can buy some advertising from Google, or some other company.

2.) Write a blog and ping the blog search engines each time you post. You can use a free program called Pingomatic. People claim that it brings them 30-120 visitors each time they post. I've posted 6 times and pinging has not brought me any traffic. People claim that you have to do it every day for the first 30 days. It might be losing its effectiveness because of the spammers out there. Pinging is also supposed to create a lot of “back links”, or free one-way links to your blog.

3.) Get listed in blog directories. I’ve just found a list of free directories at
http://trafficnymphomaniac.com/?cat=6 It’s best to have 5-10 posts on your blog before you do this.

4.) Put an Add This button on your website or blog. This allows people to recommend your site to the social bookmarking sites like Technorati, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us, etc. This can bring a lot of traffic. Also be sure to join the social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace and make pages on them. A video on YouTube with a link to your website can bring in many visitors. If you like Twitter, join that too!

5.) Exchange links with other webmasters or bloggers. You put a link to their website on your website, and then they put a link to your website on theirs. This is called “reciprocal linking”. The search engines give a higher ranking to one-way links, but this is better than nothing. A “one-way” link is when someone links to you and you don’t have to link back to them. It usually happens when someone likes your website and refers to it on their website or blog to help their readers. “Pinging” your blog can also create the links. Do a search on GOOGLE for “reciprocal linking” to find other webmasters that want to exchange links.

6.) Viral Marketing is when you give away something that keeps advertising for you. Let people print a free crochet pattern or information sheet from your website that has the name of your website on it. As it’s passed around among their friends, people will see the name of your website and possibly visit it.

Another example of Viral Marketing is Writing Free Articles. You can go to a website like Article City to see what a free article looks like. You write a free article on the same subject as your website. For instance, if you have a website about pets, you would write an article entitled,
The Best Flea Collar for Your Dog. At the end of the article you would include a link to your website. People are allowed to copy your article as long as they also include your link to your website on their website. This will bring you visitors from thousands of other websites.

A Tell-A-Friend box on your website is also effective. Let people e-mail their friends from your website and do the work for you. You don’t have to collect anyone’s e-mail address. You can get one from
Bravenet.

If you want to collect e-mail addresses, you can have people sign up for your newsletter each week, to remind them to come back.

You can also put a bumper sticker on your car with the name and the URL of your website.

That’s all I’ve got right now. I’ll be listing more later.
